Teaching your children how to reduce, reuse and recycle is an important aspect of their childhood. If they can adapt these habits at a young age, it will be easier for them to understand what can and can’t be recycled and why they are actually doing this. This will also help the planet with a caring, eco-aware generation at the helm!

Turn chores into a game!

This is a fun way to get your children motivated. There are so many games you can use to get your children recycling. ‘Recycling Relay’ is a great game! This can be done by;

- collect a pile of recyclable items, items that can be used and items that can’t be recycled

- mark 3 boxes as reuse, recycle and landfill

- place the boxes in a line in this order with the reuse box closest and landfill box furthest so it indicates that landfill should be the last option

- the children then must decide what can be done with each item. Can it be reused or made into something else? Is it recyclable?

- at the end, ask them how they can reuse the items they have placed in the reuse box and confirm that the items in recycling and landfill belong there

By teaching children to make smart decisions about their waste will make them more aware of the recycling and reducing process. You could also add an extra ‘compost’ box to get them really thinking!

Get composting

It’s easy to explain to a child what composting is, but actually seeing it happen is a great way to get the message across. Set up a small compost bin and ask your child to identify items that can be composted at any meal time. Add them to the compost bin and watch over time the natural process of items breaking down and turning to compost. The good news is that Jackson Reece wipes can be added to these compost bins as well (if there’s not human faeces on them).

Arts & Crafts

A great way to reuse materials when you have children in the house is to get crafting! Egg cartons, plastic bottles, paper towel and toilet roll holders and cardboard boxes are all everyday items that can be turned into fun craft projects!

Donate Clothes

Children seem to grow at an alarming speed so their clothes often don’t last them a very long time. Teach your child that these items can be reused by others by donating any items that are in good condition to a local charity shop!
