Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK? The majority of cases are linked to exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or sunbeds. And while we often associate sun protection with adults, babies' skin is actually far more delicate and vulnerable to damage. That’s why, during Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on how to keep your little one safe in the sun, especially as the warmer months approach.
Why Baby Skin Needs Extra Protection
Babies have thinner, more sensitive skin than adults, making them more prone to sunburn and long-term damage from UV rays. In fact, just one episode of severe sunburn in childhood can significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.
That’s why early sun protection isn’t just about avoiding short-term discomfort, it’s about setting your baby up for a lifetime of healthy skin.
Top Sun Safety Tips for Babies
Here are our go-to ways to protect your baby’s skin during sunny days:
1. Keep Babies Out of Direct Sunlight
Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight entirely, particularly between 11am and 3pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. Stick to the shade, use pram sunshades or umbrellas, and plan outdoor time for early morning or later in the afternoon.
2. Dress for The Sun
Clothing is one of the best forms of sun protection. Dress your baby in lightweight, long-sleeved tops and trousers made from tightly woven fabrics. A wide-brimmed sunhat with a neck flap offers extra coverage and keeps their little face shaded.
3. Use Baby-Safe Sunscreen (For 6 Months and Older)
Once your baby is over six months, you can apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to exposed areas like hands, feet, and face. Look for formulas specifically designed for sensitive skin or labelled as baby-friendly, and do a patch test first to check for any reaction.
4. Protect Their Eyes Too
Don’t forget those little eyes! Baby sunglasses with 100% UV protection can help prevent damage to the eyes from the sun’s rays. Look for wraparound styles with soft straps that stay in place.
5. Lead by Example
Your baby learns by watching you. When you wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, you’re not only protecting yourself, you’re showing your little one that sun safety is part of daily life.
